Seven years. It still feels strange saying it out loud.
Wedding Day Dog Nanny started in 2019 with one belief: that your dog should be able to be part of your wedding day, without you having to worry about them. At the time it was just me, a love of dogs and a determination to build something that didn't exist. I wanted couples to watch their dog come down the aisle, be in the photographs, and share the day properly — while knowing they were in safe hands. I had no idea where it would lead.
From one person to a team at Wedding Day Dog Nanny
Seven years on, Wedding Day Dog Nanny is a team of professional wedding dog chaperones: Katie, Shelley, Sheridan, Oren, Anya and Georgina.
That growth has only happened because of the couples who trusted us with one of the most important members of their family. Every one of our nannies shares the values the business was built on — kindness, professionalism, and treating every dog as though they were our own. Those haven't changed since the first wedding, and they aren't going to.
What specialising has taught us
We don't offer dog walking or pet sitting with weddings on the side. Weddings are all we do, and they have been since the beginning.
That focus teaches you things you can only learn by doing it again and again. Every venue is laid out differently. Every timeline shifts on the day. And every dog arrives with their own personality — some love being the centre of attention, some need quiet reassurance away from the noise, some will happily greet a hundred guests, and some just want to stay close to their person.
There's no single way to do this well. What works beautifully for one dog would overwhelm another. Seven years of doing nothing else has taught us to read that quickly, and to build the day around the dog in front of us.
What actually stands out
Looking back, it isn't the number of weddings that stays with me.
It's the dogs. The nervous ones who wouldn't come near us at first and were asleep against our legs by the afternoon. The ones who walked down the aisle as though they'd rehearsed it. The old boys who managed the ceremony and then very sensibly went to bed. Hundreds of them now, and we remember them all.
And it's the couples. The ones who cried when they saw their dog waiting for them. The ones who rang us months before the day because they were worried it wouldn't work. Some have become friends, and we still get photographs of dogs we looked after years ago.
Alongside them are the photographers, florists and celebrants we've worked with, and the venues that keep asking us back.
Running a small business has taught me plenty too — long days, moments of real doubt, the sort of challenges anyone who's done it will recognise. Those are the bits that shaped this into what it is.
